The short answer
There is no single price for a new boiler, because the boiler itself is only part of the job. A straightforward like-for-like combi swap in the same position is the most affordable option. Moving the boiler, converting from a tank-fed system to a combi, or upgrading the gas supply all add labour and materials. The fairest way to know your price is a free survey and a fixed written quote.

What affects the cost of a new boiler?
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Type of job | A like-for-like combi swap is quickest. Converting a regular (tank) system to a combi means removing tanks and re-piping, which takes longer. |
| Boiler brand and output | Larger homes with more bathrooms need a higher-output boiler. Premium brands cost more but usually come with longer warranties. |
| Boiler location | Moving the boiler (for example from a kitchen to a loft) means new gas, water, condensate and flue runs. |
| Flue requirements | Vertical flues through the roof, or flue extensions to meet clearance rules, add parts and labour. |
| Gas supply | Modern combis often need a larger gas pipe than the old boiler. Upgrading it is a common, necessary extra. |
| System condition | Old systems full of sludge should be cleaned (chemical or power flush) before a new boiler goes in, or the warranty can be affected. |
| Controls and extras | Smart thermostats, magnetic system filters, and thermostatic radiator valves improve efficiency and protect the new boiler. |
What should be included in a boiler quote?
When you compare quotes, check that each one includes:
- The exact boiler make, model and output (kW)
- Removal and disposal of the old boiler (and tanks, if relevant)
- A system clean or flush, plus an inhibitor to protect the system
- A magnetic system filter
- Any gas pipe, flue or condensate upgrades needed
- Controls (thermostat) and commissioning
- Gas Safe registration and Building Regulations notification
- The length of the manufacturer warranty and what it requires (usually an annual service)
A quote that looks much cheaper often leaves out the system clean, the filter, or the gas upgrade — which then appear as extras on installation day.
Should I repair or replace my boiler?
If your boiler is under about 10 years old and the fault is a single part, a repair usually makes sense. Replacement is worth considering if your boiler is over 12–15 years old, breaking down repeatedly, needs an expensive part such as a heat exchanger, or is a non-condensing model — a modern A-rated condensing boiler can noticeably reduce gas use.
Is a heat pump an alternative?
For some homes, an air source heat pump is worth comparing. Homeowners in England and Wales may be eligible for a £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant towards the cost. See our heat pump installation page to find out more.
